Autumn Classic 2009
Mildura-Coomealla Cycling Club staged its 2009 Autumn Classic on a modified Kulkyne Way course on Saturday 30 May 2009. The event, which was kindly sponsored by Coomealla Memorial Sporting Club, saw 21 seniors race under handicap conditions over 108 km, whilst ten juniors raced over 30 km. The Club welcomed its newest member, junior Tom Allford (JM13).
The seniors course comprised of the regular Kulkyne Way course but included two “detours”. The first added about 5 km to the race and saw riders turn-off to the Lindemans Winery and execute a turnaround in front of the Lindemans security gate. The second, which added about 28 km to the usual course, saw riders directed up Brownport Road to Carwarp before returning to Kulkyne Way. Conditions were fine for the race but riders had to contest a moderate ESE wind, which made for a headwind on the outward leg.
A controversial sprint finish saw Gary Henderson take the win from Dean Taylor and Nathan Langley, with Henderson also taking the award for fastest time in 2:38:07 hours. In the juniors race young Tom Allford took the win in his first outing, with second place going to Nathan Jordan (JM15). Ben Athorn (JM17) took third place and fastest time in 54:11 minutes.
Thanks to Penny Hale, Julieanne Ryan, Murray Langley, Dave Priest, Jeff Mitchell and Mark Busch for helping out on the day.
